It was the result that many have demanded for weeks: Luis Rubiales, the embattled president of Spain’s soccer federation, says he’s leaving his job.
Rubiales mentioned in video of an interview launched on Sunday that he was resigning “cause I cannot continue my work.”
He advised interviewer Piers Morgan that family and friends had advised him “to focus on your dignity and to continue your life, cause if not, probably you are going to damage people you love.”

The furor began instantly following Rubiales’ actions on the Women’s World Cup closing in late August. Following Spain’s win in Sydney, Rubiales positioned an unsolicited kiss on the mouth of star participant Jenni Hermoso, lifted participant Athenea del Castillo over his shoulder and carried her round, and made a crotch-grabbing gesture a couple of ft away from the Queen of Spain and her teenage daughter.
Criticism followed from almost all sides: Spanish politicians on the correct and left. Soccer gamers world wide, each feminine and male. FIFA introduced a 90-day provisional suspension because it started disciplinary proceedings towards him.
Rubiales claimed that the kiss was mutual and consensual, which Hermoso flatly denied — she says she by no means consented, and was “the victim of aggression.” Hermoso has filed a formal complaint towards Rubiales, as a part of an investigation by Spain’s High Court prosecutor into whether or not Rubiales dedicated an act of sexual aggression.
The Spanish soccer federation, RFEF, demanded that Rubiales resign, and released a statement “apologizing to the football world” and declaring that Rubiales “has tarnished our national team, our football and our society.”
Dozens of prime Spanish ladies’s gamers mentioned they’d refuse to play for Spain till its present leaders have been eliminated. Women’s nationwide workforce coach Jorge Vilda, a detailed ally of Rubiales and unpopular with the workforce, was dismissed by the federation on Sept. 5. Vilda referred to as the sacking “unfair” and undeserved, coming simply two weeks after profitable the Women’s World Cup.
Montse Tomé was introduced as the team’s new coach. A former participant, Tomé had been an assistant to Vilda since 2018. She will the primary lady within the function in Spain.
