Jimmy Lafakis/MDN Minot High School senior Ridge Jaeger follows through on a forehand during Saturday’s match against Jamestown at Hammond Park. The Magicians earned a 9-0 victory over the Blue Jays.

Eager to start their tennis season on a high note, the Minot High School Magicians claimed a clean sweep over Jamestown on Saturday. Minot (1-0, 1-0 WDA) blazed ahead early and earned a 9-0 victory over the Blue Jays (1-1, 1-1 WDA).

Junior Zach Diehl set the tone for the Magi with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Jamestown’s Kaden Schmidt in the No. 1 singles match.

“Zach looks to be one of the best players in the region when he puts it all together,” MHS head coach Scott DeLorme said. “We saw small glimpses of that this afternoon.”

Senior Zach Renaud played in Minot’s only three-set match of the day, but defeated Ryder Pringle 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Fellow senior Ridge Jaeger earned a convincing 6-0, 6-3 win over Mason Lutzman at No. 3.

Sophomore Hunter Rice, eighth-grader Aidan Diehl and junior Colby Opp claimed two-set victories at the bottom three singles positions.

“Our depth has a chance to be a big strength for us this year,” DeLorme said. “We have a lot of confidence in those guys, including some junior varsity guys who would see varsity action on many teams. Having the ability to go seven to nine guys deep on any given day, I think, will prove big for us throughout the year.”

Each doubles match finished in two sets. Aidan Diehl and Opp claimed the widest margin of victory (6-1, 6-1) in a win over Max Frank and Adam Sortland at No. 3 doubles.

Minot will host Williston for a 4 p.m. match on Monday at Hammond Park.
