An all-party assembly chaired by Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde befell on Wednesday and concluded with the CM batting for reservation for Marathas, saying that efforts are on in full swing for a similar.

After wrapping up the assembly, CM Eknath Shinde urged Jarange Patil to cooperate with the federal government, saying that they’re “genuinely” trying for Maratha reservation. The CM appealed to the community for patience.

However, it is learnt that Shinde has indicated that there will be no special session of the Assembly to bring Maratha reservation, the government rather is working to file a curative petition in the Supreme Court.

Activist Manoj Jarange-Patil last week launched an indefinite hunger strike to press for the demand for Maratha quota as the 40-day deadline he set before the Maharashtra government to provide reservation to the community came to an end.

Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, former CMs Sharad Pawar and Ashok Chavan, ministers Sarveshri Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, Chandrakantdada Patil, Chhagan Bhujbal, Dilip Valse Patil, Girish Mahajan, Dada Bhuse, Le ader of Opposition in Legislative Council Ambadas Danve and Leader of Opposition in Legislative Assembly Vijay Wadettiwar were present in the meeting.

• Amid a fresh wave of protests, authorities in Dharashiv district of Maharashtra started distributing Kunbi caste certificates to the eligible Maratha community members, paving the way for their inclusion in the OBC category. The first such certificate was handed over to Sumit Mane from Kari village in the district based on the proof, an official said. District collector Sachin Ombase handed over the Kunbi caste certificate to Mane. The development comes a day after the state government published an order asking officials concerned to issue fresh Kunbi caste certificates to eligible Maratha community members, paving the way for them to avail reservation benefits under the OBC category.

• Maharashtra Police has so far registered 141 cases in connection with the violence during the Maratha quota agitations and arrested 168 persons, state DGP Rajnish Seth said on Wednesday. Speaking about the violence in Beed district, he said 20 cases have been registered including seven offences under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC between October 24 and 31. A RAF company has been deployed in Beed district to avoid any untoward incident and Internet services in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar (rural), Jalna, and Beed have been suspended. Public properties worth Rs 12 crore were damaged by miscreants across the state during demonstrations (over eight days), the DGP said.

• NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) leader Supriya Sule on Wednesday hit out at the Eknath Shinde-led dispensation, saying the Maratha reservation issue has remained unresolved due to the “failure” of the “corrupt and bogus” Maharashtra government. “It is the failure of the state government to address the issues of the Maratha community. It is this corrupt and bogus triple-engine government that is consistently lying to the people and continues to do so.” She was responding to a question concerning the violence in components of the state through the Maratha quota agitation. “It was the generosity of Maratha activist Manoj Jarange who gave a further 10 days to the federal government when it was looking for 30 days (to implement a quota for the neighborhood). What was the federal government considering when it sought 30 days?” the Baramati MP asked.

• Activist Manoj Jarange on Wednesday asked the Maharashtra government to make it clear whether it is ready to provide reservation to the entire Maratha community and why it needs more time in granting it. Jarange made the remarks after the government held an all-party meeting in Mumbai earlier in the day to discuss the Maratha quota issue. “I don’t want to know the details of what had happened during the all-party meeting. The government says they want time. They should tell us how much time it wants and also tell us what the problem is in giving reservation to the Maratha community. We will then think about it.”

However, Jarange opposed the move saying the entire Maratha community should be given reservation. “It (the government order) is not acceptable and the government should cancel it,” he stated.

• The Beed administration on Wednesday morning lifted curfew imposed in parts of the district after violence during the Maratha quota agitation. Prohibition orders will continue in the district, located in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra, and Internet services are still shut to maintain law and order, officials said, adding that there is no relaxation in curfew in Dharashiv district as of now.

• Two youths reportedly climbed a 300-feet mobile tower in Dharashiv, and are refusing to come down till they get reservation. Police is on the spot, requesting them to come down.

• Maratha quota agitators vandalised Maharashtra cabinet minister Hasan Mushrif’s SUV parked in south Mumbai on Wednesday morning, police said. Three persons were detained by the Marine Drive police in this connection, an official said.

• CM Shinde called an all-party meeting on Wednesday to discuss the situation in the state amid the intensified Maratha quota agitation which took a violent turn in some parts of the state, but Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray was not invited for the meet. READ MORE

• On Tuesday, services of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) buses were stopped completely in five districts of Marathwada in central Maharashtra amid the violence. Bus services in Parbhani, Dharashiv, Latur, Jalna and Nanded districts have been suspended completely for the last three-four days while they have been hit to some extent in Beed, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Solapur districts, said the official of the state-owned corporation.

• Pro-Maratha reservation protestors on Tuesday burnt tyres on the Pune-Bengaluru highway near Navale bridge in Maharashtra’s Pune. The visuals showed a large number of people burning tyres, shouting slogans and disrupting the traffic.

• A curfew was imposed in Maharashtra’s Beed and Dharashiv after violence by the Maratha quota agitators.

• Maharashtra’s Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Sanjay Saxena has visited Beed district to take stock of the situation after large scale violence there during the Maratha quota agitation, an official said on Wednesday. So far, 99 people have been arrested in connection with the violence in Beed and the situation is currently under control, he said.

• Curfew was imposed and Internet services were suspended in central Maharashtra’s Beed district after the violence on Monday. The residence of Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit Pawar group) MLA Prakash Solanke at Majalgaon town in Beed was set on fire and stones were hurled at it by a group of quota agitators on Monday morning.

• The group also set ablaze a car parked at the residence after an audio clip of the MLA, in which he purportedly spoke about the Maratha quota agitation and made a veiled comment on quota activist Manoj Jarange who is on an indefinite fast, went viral. Later, the protesters set ablaze the first floor of the Majalgaon Municipal Council building.

• Another group of protesters barged into the residential premises and workplace of NCP MLA Sandeep Kshirsagar in Beed metropolis and set them on hearth on Monday night. The residence of former Maharashtra minister Jaydutt Kshirsagar within the metropolis was additionally torched.
