SHERBURN — The Martin County West School Board this week received updates on how the district is coping with the coronavirus pandemic.
Superintendent Allison Schmidt reported that health and safety procedures are going well, with everyone wearing face coverings and extra sanitation being performed in the buildings.
She said seven students in K-2 are utilizing distance learning. She noted there are some issues with technology and internet connections for some families, but these are being handled.
Dean of Students Michelle Baker said hybrid learning at the junior/senior high school is going well. She said students are grateful they can be in school at least part of the time. When they were at home, students were actively engaged with their lessons, she said. Baker added that teachers and families are working together creatively.
Officials say after-school programs are being used to help with homework and questions.
Athletic director Chad Brusky reported he has proposed continuing practice for volleyball and football. Students and coaches have welcomed the decision to have fall sports, he noted.
An 11-week season will begin Oct. 8. Football will have a six-game schedule.
Only 250 fans, including for both teams, will be allowed in the stands.
Homecoming is being planned, but it will be different than in normal years, officials say.
In other business, the school board:
o Scheduled a truth-in-taxation meeting for 6 p.m. Dec. 21.
o Learned that $50,000 has been spent on COVID-related supplies so far.
o Approved hiring Carter Wille as a math teacher, Dr. Jeffrey Walker as the business education instructor and Chelsea Brawls as the art instructor.
o Raised substitute pay for teachers to $130 for a full day and $65 for a half; custodial subs get $11 per hour; and PERA and food service subs get $10.75 per hour.
o Learned the Minnesota High School League approved additional dues of $5,000 for Martin County West because of financial difficulties at the league.
o Learned the U.S. Department of Agriculture will provide free meals for all students until funding runs out or at the end of December, whichever comes first.
o Learned the next school board meeting will be 6:30 p.m. Oct. 19. It can be livestreamed ZOOM.
