KOLKATA: The Covid-19 pandemic has brought the sporting economy to a standstill. In India, the lockdown has immensely affected all clubs, sports bodies, leagues and people who are actively involved with sports.
Among many of them, one such person is Jamuna Das.
The 56-year-old Agarpara resident, followed East Bengal wherever the team played, selling hard candy to the fans and supporters which helped her earn the name ‘Lozenges Didi‘.
But the nationwide lockdown and suspension of all football activities at the Kolkata Maidan has ceased her earnings.
The lockdown meant that the childless widow, a well-known face during East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan Sporting Club matches over the last three decades, had no source of income.
To help her during this tough time, East Bengal fans group had earlier come forward to help the die-hard supporter of the Red and Golds.
And on Sunday, Mohammedan Sporting too showed their support and came forward to help Das.
Club’s general secretary Sk. Wasim Akram and finance secretary Sharique Ahmed visited Das’ home to hand over money and essentials.
“She is an asset in Kolkata Maidan. She has been supporting city clubs so well and selling the famous candy. It is our duty to help her in this tough time. She was in tears when we met her,” Akram said.
“Mohammedan Sporting is always with her and will help her in any need. I feel very proud that we could help such a person. In future, we are always ready to come forward and help in any need,” he added.
Mohammedan Sporting will be playing in the forthcoming second division qualifiers to get promotion into the I-League.
“She congratulated our team and wished us for the second division qualifiers. This is a big blessing for us,” Akram said.
