In a statement released Monday, CHSAA commissioner Rhonda Blanford-Green spoke of reconsideration in regards to the fall high school sports season. And, Gov. Jared Polis said Tuesday he is open to discussing with CHSAA the possibility of bringing back more fall sports, perhaps sooner than later.
In the statement, released on CHSAANow.com, Blanford-Green said CHSAA will continue to work with state officials and the schools to perhaps begin more fall sports sooner than CHSAA’s 2020-21 sports calendar had previously designated.
“In recent weeks, we have seen reconsideration at the Association, school district and conference level regarding the resuming fall sports, especially football,” Blanford-Green said in the news release. “We also hear those who are advocating for a reconsideration of the 2020-21 sport calendar.”
Numerous other states in recent weeks have reversed course and begun fall sports, like football, after previously opting to postpone seasons because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Over the course of the past week, this has prompted conversations at the state level to see if some outdoor fall sports could resume under the state safety guidelines, including variances that would be needed to make this happen,” Blanford-Green said in the news release. “We appreciate their willingness to keep the dialogue open.”
Under the current CHSAA sports schedule, cross country, boys golf, boys tennis and softball were allowed to start this past month, while other traditional fall sports — football, boys soccer, girls volleyball, unified bowling, gymnastics, field hockey and spirit — were postponed until the late winter/early spring.
On Tuesday, Polis met with media in Boettcher Mansion in Denver and expressed a desire to work with CHSAA to bring an earlier start date to fall sports that have, to this point, been postponed.
“We want to work with CHSAA,” Polis said, according to Kyle Newman of the Denver Post. “If their board moves forward and wants to propose a fall season, we would be thrilled to make that happen for the districts that are ready to go.”
