A school district in Essex County has suspended sports and extra curricular activities for two weeks after officials learned of a large party over the weekend attended by students.

Vernona superintendent Rui Dionisio said in a letter to the school community that at least one person might have tested positive for the coronavirus, though school officials hadn’t received confirmation yet. People who attended the part didn’t social distance or wear masks, the superintendent said.

Verona’s outdoor fall sports teams were scheduled to begin practice Monday in preparation for the fall season. Marching band and clubs are also suspended for 14 days.

“It is important to remind all parents, guardians, and students, that large gatherings and congregations that do not follow COVID-19 safety expectations may result in the cancellation of school and school programs until it has been deemed safe to return”, Dionisio said in his letter. “We remind our community to do your part to make sure that our personal behaviors do not interfere with the goal of incrementally and safely reopening our schools and activities.”

Verona High School began the school year Monday with all-remote instruction.

A spokeswoman for the Montclair Department of Health, which oversees Verona, said Monday afternoon the department is aware of the gathering but has not received any reports of positive tests yet.

A Verona police spokesman didn’t immediately return a phone call from NJ Advance Media asking for additional information.

Mayor Jack McEvoy also couldn’t immediately be reached.
