— The N.C. High School Athletic Association will not play high school football this fall and all other sports will see changes to their schedules after a vote by the NCHSAA Board of Directors on Tuesday evening, NCHSAA Commissioner Que Tucker announced in a video statement on Wednesday afternoon.

High school football season will begin in early February and run through early April, while no sports will be permitted to hold official tryouts or practices until at least Nov. 4.

The first sports that will be played are cross country and volleyball, starting in November and running through early January. Swimming will follow, starting in late November and running through the end of January.

Basketball season has been pushed back to December. It will run from December through mid-February. Boys soccer and boys & girls lacrosse are scheduled to begin in January and end in mid-March.

Golf, boys tennis, girls soccer, and softball will be played in March and April. Then the sports year will end with baseball, girls tennis, track & field, and wrestling from mid-April through mid-June.

All seasons will be shortened, with football playing seven games and most other sports playing 14 games. Cross country, swimming & diving, and track & field will have 10 competitions.

No decisions have been made about the state playoffs, but the NCHSAA says they plan to hold playoffs.

Here’s the full calendar:

  • Nov. 4-Jan. 8: Cross country, volleyball (First competition, Nov. 16)
  • Nov. 23-Jan. 30: Swimming & diving (First competition, Dec. 7)
  • Dec. 7-Feb. 19: Basketball (First competition, Jan. 4)
  • Jan. 11-Mar. 12: Boys soccer, lacrosse (First competition, Jan. 25)
  • Feb. 8-Apr. 9: Football (First competition, Feb. 26)
  • Mar. 1-Apr. 30: Golf, boys tennis, girls soccer, softball (First competition, Mar. 15)
  • Apr. 12-June 11: Baseball, girls tennis, track & field, wrestling (First competition, Apr. 26)
  • May 1: Cheerleading invitational

The NCHSAA will hold a press conference at 3:30 p.m. to answer questions from members of the media.

The fall sports season was supposed to begin on Aug. 1, but the NCHSAA postponed that date until Sept. 1. Then, earlier this month, the NCHSAA postponed the start of fall sports again after Governor Roy Cooper extended Phase 2 of the state’s reopening plan until at least Sept. 11.

This is a developing story and HighSchoolOT will update this article as more information is available.
