At least 140 people were killed and several others injured when a powerful 6.4 magnitude earthquake jolted Nepal just before midnight on Friday, destroying hundreds of houses in the Himalayan country’s remote mountainous region in the most devastating tremor since 2015.
According to the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre, the earthquake with an epicentre in Jajarkot district, about 500km west of Kathmandu, was recorded at 11:47 pm.
It is the most devastating earthquake in the country since the 2015 earthquake that killed around 9,000 people in the country and injured more than 22,000 people.
The death count in Nepal earthquake has increased to 132, the news agency AFP reported citing officials. Jajarkot and Rukum were the two districts hit worst by the earthquake.

Sarita Singh, deputy head of the Nalgarh municipality in Jajarkot was killed in the quake, officials said.
Strong tremors were felt in several districts of Bihar as an earthquake of magnitude 6.4 struck neighbouring Nepal on Friday. The tremors were felt in Patna, Katihar, Motihari and few other districts along the India-Nepal border, officials said.
However, no loss of life or damage to property was reported in the state.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said that he is “deeply saddened” by loss of lives and damage due to the earthquake in Nepal.
“India stands in solidarity with the folks of Nepal and is able to lengthen all doable help. Our ideas are with the bereaved households and we want the injured a fast restoration,” he said in a tweet.

The death count in Nepal earthquake has jumped to 128, the news agency PTI reported.
More than 140 people have also sustained injuries in Jajarkot and Rukum districts.
Jajarkot district chief Suresh Sunar said that the death count in Nepal earthquake may “rise”.
“It continues to be evening and it’s troublesome to get all the knowledge,” he informed the information company AFP.
Earthquakes are a regular occurrence in Nepal as it lies on a major geological faultline where the Indian tectonic plate pushes up into the Eurasian plate, forming the Himalayas.
Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has expressed grief over the human and material damage caused by the powerful earthquake in the country.
“Honorable Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” has expressed his deep sorrow over the human and materials harm brought on by the earthquake at Ramidanda in Jajarkot at 11:47 on Friday evening and has mobilized all 3 safety companies for the fast rescue and aid of the injured,” the Nepal PMO posted on X, previously Twitter.
At least 34 people had been killed in the Jajarkot district while at least 35 deaths had been reported in neighbouring Rukum West district after a powerful earthquake hit Nepal.
