FORT MYERS, Fla. — Thanksgiving and Christmas are the most popular times of year to fly. To prepare for the influx of holiday travelers, Southwest Florida’s International Airport (RSW) is implementing new touch-less technology in high-traffic areas to help people feel safe during the coronavirus pandemic.

The first change travelers will see is the hands-free ticket dispenser for the short-term parking lot.

“Before, when you would come into our short term parking lot, you would literally have to push a button. Which, I’m sure nobody likes to do right now,” says Ben Siegel, executive director lee county port authority, “We’ve installed new technology where if you just wave your hand the ticket comes out all by itself so now you’re grabbing a ticket that has not been touched by anybody else.”

Security checkpoints will also be upgraded to no-contact ID and plane ticket checks.

“There used to be an exchange of documentation or exchanging your phone with the ticket document checker and all of that is now touchless,” says Siegel.

The new changes have been in place for about a week and one frequent flyer says she feels safe while walking through RSW.

“I travel all the time. I think people should start to travel and not worry,” says Hana.
