Nick Alvarez will be joining the Montgomery Advertiser staff as a sports reporter. Alvarez will primarily cover high school sports while contributing to college athletics coverage.

“I couldn’t be more excited to move to Montgomery,” Alvarez said.

Alvarez is a native of Union City, New Jersey. He graduated in May from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse with a bachelor’s degree in magazine journalism.

Last summer, Alvarez interned with The Fort Myers (Florida) News-Press, where he covered a myriad of sports. He profiled South Fort Myers head football coach Willis May along with a local boxer training for one last shot at the Olympics. Those two pieces won Associated Press Sports Editors top-10 national awards for feature and video, respectively. He also assisted with high school football coverage.

Previously, Alvarez worked for the Brooklyn Cyclones and freelanced for The Jersey Journal.

Alvarez was a member of the Sports Journalism Institute’s class of 2020. He was interning with USA Today and For The Win when he accepted the position with the Advertiser. His start date is Sept. 28.

Alvarez replaces Andre Toran, who took a position with the Louisville Courier-Journal in Kentucky.
