South Sydney’s former boss was so deeply concerned about Greg Inglis’s mental ill-health, he feared at one point it would end in tragedy.
Ex-Bunnies CEO Shane Richardson has revealed he feared Inglis may take his own life when the star hit rock bottom and went missing during the NRL’s Magic Round in 2019.
Richardson reveals the grave fears for Inglis felt around rugby league during an upcoming episode of ABC’s Australian Story, where the NRL superstar opens up on his lowest moments.
Inglis disappeared and went on a two-day bender in Brisbane in May last year when all 16 NRL teams converged on the city for the code’s ‘Magic Round’.

A tearful Richardson told Australian Story Inglis reached his lowest ebb while in the grip of Bipolar II Disorder and alcoholism.
“I was feeling that he would take his own life because he couldn’t see a way out it,” Richardson said.
“Out of where he was going and how he was going to get there, that he’d felt he’d let everyone down.”

Inglis himself said he’d “gone past rock bottom”, but insisted he never felt suicidal.
The league legend reveals a season-ending knee injury two years earlier left him in a dark place.
“When I was feeling down, training was the only thing that kept me stable,” he said.
“Once that went away, it had a massive effect.
“Something I loved had been taken away and I just didn’t know how to cope.”
