Omaha Public Schools responded Tuesday after many parents described difficulty getting connected for remote learning. “We continue to work with families as they reach out with challenges,” a statement read. “We encourage families to reach out directly to their school by phone or email with any questions. If in-person support is needed, we have three Family Support Centers open this week. We’ve seen steady traffic throughout the day and our staff has been eager to assist…We have had families reach out to schools with questions about the device and apps, as can be expected when a district that serves 54,000 students transitions to remote learning with new devices. We care deeply about supporting our students and have staff across our community working on this priority.”Officials said more than 30,000 new iPads have been deployed and there is a final wave of iPads forthcoming.Long lines were observed at Skinner Magnet Center, one of the locations parents go for support with technology. The following services will be available for families at each location: – Student Support Liaisons – Bilingual Liaisons – Counselors – Social Workers – Nutrition Services – to assist with meal applications and Meals2Go information – Technology Support – Student and Community Services There will be signage at each location to help direct families. Locations: We will have three locations centrally located throughout Omaha. The locations are: – Skinner Magnet Center – Beveridge Magnet School — Bryan Middle School Dates and Times The Family Support Centers will be open Aug. 18-21 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. At the end of the week, we will determine if future dates will be needed. 4Health and Safety Precautions All visitors will be required to wear facial coverings while at any of the Family Support Centers. We ask all staff and families to maintain distance whenever possible for the health and well-being of everyone. Technology Support In addition to in-person supports, the district has produced several videos to help families navigate District provided iPads. To review resources, click here. We are excited to learn again with our students. We hope that the Family Support Centers will provide the additional assistance needed to get the school year started.
