PAT Shortt reckons the live entertainment industry will find it “very tough” to get back up and running after the devastating impact of Covid-19.

The comedian says the difficulty is made worse by the fact that the sector doesn’t have a lobby group.

Shortt had to cancel a string of sold-out gigs when the pandemic sent the country into lockdown in March.

He explained: “We had shows that were sold out, and they were all cancelled. All our live show crew have been made redundant, because we’ve no work for them.”

The veteran entertainer kept busy during lockdown working on his comedy podcast called The Wellness Hour with Paaaah!

And he’s back to work next week to film his final scenes on the TV series Frank of Ireland alongside Brian and Domhnall Gleeson.

‘EXTREMELY HARD’

He explained: “I think film and TV are going to do better than the live scene.

“The worst part of the live shows is that I’ve a new one due to open in January.

“It’s the uncertainty of not knowing when it might happen. At least if you knew, you could make some effort. But do you put all your energy into a show that might not be able to go ahead?”

He continued: “There’s a lot of venues around Ireland dedicated to entertainment and they just can’t open. It’s extremely hard, it’s very tough and we don’t have a lobby group which makes it even harder.”

One project Pat did manage to complete was an episode of RTE’s No Place Like Home, which saw him touring around Dublin with his daughter Lily.

The series airs tonight at 6.30pm on RTE One.
