Abstract

This paper considers the potential labor market penalties of the progressive exercise of the biggest U.S. corporations (‘superstars’) over eight many years. Superstars generate a big share of improvements, and their improvements are technologically distinct and differentially impactful relative to these of different corporations. Leveraging a novel patent-level measure of improvements’ labor-augmenting and labor-automating potential, we present that celebrity improvements usually tend to increase labor in comparison with improvements pioneered by different corporations, particularly in current many years. Workers of various ability sorts don’t profit equally, nevertheless: prime corporations’ differential labor augmentation is essentially restricted to high-paid occupations. This suggests modern-day celebrity corporations’ improvements contribute to the diverging labor market fortunes of high- and low-skilled staff. We spotlight that the social worth of augmenting improvements as measured by novelty and mental influence has risen whereas their market worth has fallen—notably for improvements which increase middle-skilled staff—suggesting that labor-augmenting improvements could also be under-supplied by the market.
