The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association voted on Friday to resume fall sports activities beginning Monday despite Gov. Tom Wolf’s recommendation to push athletics back until Jan. 1, 2021.

But the organization also gave the choice to each school and league to decide how they handle their sports.

Colonial League schools Palisades, Saucon Valley, Catasauqua, Notre Dame, Wilson, Northwestern Lehigh and Moravian Academy plan to start official practices on Monday, administrators confirmed to lehighvalleylive.com.

Northern Lehigh, Bangor and Southern Lehigh will not begin all of their fall sports on Monday.

Mandatory practices for Northern Lehigh are scheduled to start on Sept. 8. The first athletic contest for the Bulldogs will be Sept. 25. All of these dates are tentative, according to Northern Lehigh athletic director Bryan Geist.

For now, it’s unclear when Bangor will begin full-fledged practices.

“Our superintendent and school board will discuss early next week,” Bangor athletic director Bron Holland said. “As soon as we have a decision on when and what sports, I’ll release it.”

Southern Lehigh will officially start practices on Monday for non-contact sports: golf, girls tennis, and boys and girls cross country. But the Spartans’ contact sports will have to wait.

“The contact sports of field hockey, boys and girls soccer, football, and girls volleyball are continuing to engage in voluntary workouts without contact as the district continues to communicate with our medical providers while following the guidelines set forth by the Governor’s Office, PA Department of Health, and PA Department of Education,” Southern Lehigh athletic director Marc Zimmerman said.

Athletic administrators at Pen Argyl, Salisbury and Palmerton didn’t immediately respond to inquiries about their fall sports starting dates.

The Colonial League athletic directors will meet Monday to discuss schedules based on schools’ return-to-play plans. The league voted 8-5 on Aug. 6, prior to the governor’s recommendation and the PIAA’s two-week delay, to move forward with its regular fall schedule, while allowing schools to make independent decisions regarding postponements and cancellations without penalty.

The Eastern Pennsylvania Conference has pushed contact sports back with contests in field hockey, soccer and girls volleyball set to begin on Sept. 25, and football scheduled to kick off Oct. 2.
