As a meeting between Governor Tom Wolf and PIAA officials loomed Friday, another group worked its way into the discussion regarding whether high school athletics should take place in Pennsylvania this fall.

And while no word has yet to be given from the scheduled meeting between Wolf and the PIAA, the PA Athletic Oversight Committee appears to believe the plan will be to move forward with a fall sports season because it says it will host a meeting Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Senate Chamber to “discuss the plans by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA), school superintendents, coaches, and athletic directors to resume school sports safely this fall.”

The press release regarding the meeting came from the office of Senator Scott Martin (R-13). PennLive’s inquiries regarding the release were not immediately answered.

“School sports play a critical role in the mental health and development of young people, and every effort should be made to ensure students can participate in these activities safely in the fall,” Martin said in the release. “Many recreation leagues were able to function without incident over the summer. I look forward to discussing ways that we can learn from their example to ensure school sports can resume in a way that ensures the health and safety of everyone involved.”

The release comes just hours after the five-team Delaware Valley League joined a list of leagues and teams opting-out of the fall season.

Wolf has recommended that no athletics be played in the fall, but he and the PIAA are slated to meet Friday as the association looks to clarify how it should or if it should proceed in planning for the season.
