Remember movie theaters?
Those used to be fun in the pre-coronavirus world, right? A place where on any given night your desire for nearly any type of entertainment could be fulfilled.
Monday night was, in essence, a theater complex for the New England sports fan.
After months on athletic inactivity, things have picked up in the world of sports and Monday saw an embarrassment of riches for those seeking to be entertained by competition. It’s both glorious and overwhelming, with options of all types.
With so many choices, what’s a fan to do?
Grab your popcorn and let’s dig in.
In the mood for action? You probably looked to the hardwood in Lake Buena Vista, where the Celtics began their postseason run. The third-seeded C’s kicked things off against the Philadelphia 76ers, the Eastern Conference’s sixth seed and a rival with whom things have become heated over the past few years.
Will this be the year either relatively-young team gets over the hump and makes a deep playoff run? Perhaps. But one team will be sent home early and the series should be a study in contrasting styles.
Philadelphia is big, while the Celtics don’t have a dominant interior presence, but have several scoring threats and play – when they’re at their best – smothering team defense.
Were it a film, it would certainly be of the action variety, with dunks, blocks and long-range 3s taking the place of explosions and fight scenes.
And star power? It’s there, with Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Kemba Walker and Gordon Hayward’s names on the marquee for Boston, while Joel Embiid is the leading man for the 76ers.
Is drama more your thing? You probably checked in with the Bruins in Toronto, playing Game 4 of their series against the Carolina Hurricanes. Left high and dry by starting netminder Tuukka Rask, Boston managed to win Game 3 on Saturday and looks to continue its success with goalie Jaroslav Halak, thrust into the spotlight.
The window of opportunity is running out for the B’s core veterans of Patrice Bergeron, Brad Marchand, David Krejci and Zdeno Chara. And standing in its way of advancing are a quick and gritty Hurricanes team, hoping to add to the misery of a group that has seen its star backstop pack up and head home.
Ahead 2-1 in the series, the Bruins eyed a stranglehold on the series with a victory.
Just there for the trailer of your favorite actor’s upcoming feature? You watched the highlights and reports on Patriots training camp in Foxboro, which got underway on Monday.
You won’t see Cam Newton evading a serious rush or Julian Edelman making a big catch in a clutch situation, but any visual of the Pats on the field will surely whet one’s appetite for NFL action.
Just enough to get the wheels turning in anticipation of what will come next.
If none of those work, perhaps a comedy is more your speed. In that case, you probably checked in on the Red Sox as they closed their series in the Bronx with the Yankees.
Boston hasn’t been great this season. That’s an understatement, as night in and night out, the opposition has pummeled Red Sox pitching.
It’s a nightly game of “How badly will they lose?” It’s a bit painful to watch, but a little laughter can mask the pain.
And if you’re not satisfied with the choice you make Monday night, the sequels are coming fast and furious. For at least the next week, all four teams will be viewing options.
So it’s up to you, dear reader. What are you in the mood to watch?
