SHEPHERD — The Alpena High cross country team had a solid day at the Shepherd Blue Jay Invite on Saturday.
Twelve of Alpena’s 13 boys runners ran season-best times. Hayden Allen (17:11) was Alpena’s top finisher in a race that included Traverse City Central, Traverse City West, Petoskey, and East Lansing among other schools. Allen’s time was a career best and Brendan Stepaniak (18:54) also had a career-best time.
Jacob Kochanski, Hunter Hitzelberger, Elijah Allen, and Blake MacDonald filled out Alpena’s top five.
Madi Szymanski led Alpena’s girls team with a time of 18:48. She was followed by Grace Mitchell and freshmen runners Emma Dickins, Hannah Tracey, and Cailyn Burrone to round out the top five.
Grace Mitchell (21:26) and Karlin Decker (23:30) turned in career best times.
“The competition was fierce with some of the top runners in the state,” Alpena coach Joy Bullis said. “The course was flat and fast. A great chance to showcase the speed we have been working on.”
GIRLS GOLF
Ellis 8th at Katke Invite
BIG RAPIDS–Alpena High senior Kennedy Ellis competed in the Katke Invitational at Ferris State University, Oct. 2-3, finishing eighth overall.
Ellis carded a two-day score of 194 to earn her eighth top-10 finish out of 11 high school tournaments for the season.
FOOTBALL
Oscoda 46, Tawas 0
OSCODA — The Oscoda football team just keeps on scoring.
Owen Franklin threw for 159 yards and two scores and ran for 126 yards and two more touchdowns as the Owls rolled past Tawas 46-0 on Friday at home.
Through three games, Oscoda (3-0) has outscored its opponents 154-0.
Franklin wasn’t the only Owl to find paydirt Friday as Zach Oulette, Brennan Mills, and Dress Hess each found the end zone.
Oulette had 87 rushing yards and two scores, Mills had 44 reception yards and a touchdown, and Hess had 96 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Gavin Lueck led Oscoda on defense with 10 tackles and three sacks.
Oscoda plays at Blanchard-Montabella on Friday.
