PRINCE GEORGE — Prince George County Public Schools will receive an additional $1.5 million in funding from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act via the Prince George Board of Supervisors, the school division announced in a press release Friday, September 11.
Most of this additional funding will go toward technology purchases, totaling $1.27 million, the release said. Those purchases will include giving 450 homes internet access, providing 1,170 internet-capable devices to families who have expressed a need, and an additional 2,299 devices for families with students in kindergarten through fourth grade, which will ensure each student in the school division will have a device assigned to them. The funds will also provide equipment to assist teachers working remotely, and also unspecified technology to assist students with disabilities.
“We are thankful to our partners on the Prince George County Board of Supervisors for providing this additional CARES Act funding to the school division,” Prince George County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Lisa Pennycuff said in the release. “This funding allows us to be able to make purchases that support our efforts to provide high-quality instruction to our students on campus and virtually in a manner that protects the health and safety of our entire school community.”
The remaining portions of the funding will be used to contract certified nursing assistants, pay for additional custodial staff, purchase personal protective equipment for faculty and staff, outfit busses with COVID-19 fighting air filtration systems, purchase water fountains with purification systems and fund virtual child-care and study halls for staff on Fridays.
Last week, PGCPS confirmed reports the division was suffering from a shortage of 2,500 Chromebook laptops intended for students. The school division updated the situation later in the week, saying that 800 of those 2,500 devices would arrive by late September.
