NEW DELHI: The Special Investigation Team, formed to probe the death of a 19-year-old Dalit woman after an alleged gangrape, has completed its examination, a Hathras administration official said on Saturday.
The administration also lifted restrictions on the media’s entry into the village, a day after outsiders, including politicians, were barred from meeting the victim’s family. However, protests continues at several places against the UP government for mishandling the case.

Rahul, Priyanka on way to Hathras after high drama
Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra reached Hathras on Saturday to meet the family of the Dalit woman following a massive show of party strength and some scuffles too at the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border.
Scores of police personnel in riot gear were lined up at the Delhi-Noida Direct flyway to prevent the Congress convoy from moving to Hathras initially.
A scuffle also broke out between the police and Congress workers at the Delhi-Noida flyway where Priyanka Gandhi could be seen protesting the party workers during the lathicharge.
Only five members of a delegation of MPs led by Rahul Gandhi were permitted to go to Hathras via Noida considering the restrictions imposed under CrPC Section 144, the Gautam Buddh Nagar Police said.
Prepone date on which victim’s kin appear before court, petition urges HC
A letter petition has been filed in the Allahabad high court, seeking a direction to prepone the date on which Hathras gang-rape victim’s family members appear before it so that they can speak about the horrific tragedy without any pressure or coercion.
The letter was written by apex court lawyer Kuldeep Rai. He also sought that the victim’s family members be provided with police security keeping in view the apprehension that there could be life-threatening incidents in the case.
The letter, sought a direction that criminal contempt proceedings should be initiated against all the erring police officials and the District Magistrate there for allegedly violating the high court’s specific direction not to influence the victim’s family members.
SIT will look into all issues, says UP addl chief Secy
The SIT will look into all issues raised by the family of the Dalit woman in Hathras, and the strictest action will be taken against the culprits, Uttar Pradesh additional chief secretary, home, Awanish Awasthi, said after meeting the victim’s kin.
A decision has also been taken for providing security permanently in the village, the senior officer, who along with DGP H C Awasthy rushed to meet the victim’s family on the instructions of chief minister Yogi Adityanath, said.
He said orders for the suspension of police personnel, including the Superintendent of Police and the Circle Officer of the area, were issued on Friday within two hours of receiving the first report from the Special Investigation Team.
The officer said that they would submit a report to the chief minister.
Victim’s family speaks to media after two days
Seeking justice for the 19-year-old girl, the family members of the Hathras victim spoke to reporters after two days when the media was allowed to enter their village.
“We want to know whose body was burnt on that day. And if it was our sister’s body then why did they burn her (the body) in this manner? All of us requested the police and the administration to allow us to see her one last time,” said the victim’s brother after the media was allowed in the village and to speak with the victim’s family.
“Moreover, when we requested for the post mortem report, they said you will not understand it as you cannot read English,” the brother said.
The family complained that they have not been allowed to go out of the house for the last two days and there is a constant presence of police personnel in the house all the time.
Mamata takes out rally in Kolkata
West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led government at the Centre for running a “dictatorship” in the country and said the saffron party is a “pandemic” which is torturing dalits the most.
Banerjee, who held a protest march against the Hathras gangrape case, said she will stand by the Dalit community till the end as her caste is “humanity” and she does not believe in differentiation on the grounds of caste and religion.
The march, the first by the fiesty TMC supremo since March when the nationwide lockdown was declared to break the coronavirus infection chain, covered the 2-km distance between Birla Planetarium to Gandhi statue on Mayo Road.
Valmiki community members clash with police in Agra
Scores of Valmiki community members who were protesting against the Hathras incident clashed with the police in Agra.
The protesters pelted stones at the policemen and official vehicles.
Police personnel were deployed at the clash site outside a municipal corporation office in Kothi Meena Bazaar area of the Taj city, officials said.
Satyarthi appeals to PM to end ‘crisis of justice’ for women, children
Nobel laureate Kailash Satyarthi has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to end the “crisis of justice” for women and children, saying what is happening to “our daughters” across India is a matter of “national shame”.
Reacting to the Hathras incident and other cases of sexual assaults on women in the country, Satyarthi said he implores the Prime Minister to lead the “war on rape”.
Calling for a people’s movement to break “this mindset” of violence, Satyarthi said “we need both compassionate political will and people’s action” to bring an end to the culture of rape.
Mayawati demands CBI or SC monitored probe
BSP president Mayawati demanded a CBI probe or Supreme Court-monitored inquiry into the Hathras incident, as she said people were not satisfied with the initial investigations in the matter.
“There is tremendous resentment in the entire country over the Hathras heinous gang-rape case. The public does not seem satisfied with the initial probe report. Therefore, this matter should be investigated by the CBI or under the supervision of the honourable Supreme Court. This is the demand of the BSP,” Mayawati said.
“Also, the honourable President of the country, who also comes from UP and is a Dalit, it is a strong appeal to him to intervene in this case, keeping in mind the inhuman attitude of the government, to bring justice to the victim family,” she said.
Top UP officials to meet victim’s family
Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath rushed senior officials, including the additional chief secretary (home) and DGP to Hathras, to meet the family of the alleged gangrape victim.
Additional chief secretary (home) Awanish Awasthi and Director General of Police H C Awasthi visited Hathras and would be submitting their report to the chief minister, a government spokesperson said.
