Public Health Sudbury and Districts is reporting the region’s 70th case of COVID-19.

In a news release issued this evening, the health unit said the person is under the age of 19 who came into contact with a person who had contracted COVID-19 through travel. The person, who is from the Greater Sudbury area, is self-isolating. The gender was not specified.

After a month without any new cases, this is the second new case in two days reported by Public Health Sudbury and the third case reported this week.

As it has stated before, the health unit will notify all close contacts of the person. “If you are not contacted by Public Health, you are not considered a close contact,” Public Health stated.

In the same news release, the health unit cautioned the public about hosting or attending large gatherings of people.

“Although permissible for up to 50 people indoors and 100 outdoors, non-essential in-person gatherings of any size should be limited,” the statement reads. “Community spread remains possible and is likely in Sudbury and districts. 

Further, Public Health reiterated physical distancing and face covering guidelines.

Ontario reported 195 new COVID-19 cases today, a sharp increase over the 103 cases reported Thursday. 

Public Health Ontario said 66 per cent of those new cases are in people under the age of 40.

There have been 38,405 lab-confirmed cases of the coronavirus reported in Ontario since the pandemic began, with 34,100 of those (88.8 per cent) now indicated recovered. 

There are 1,547 active, lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the province based on Public Health Ontario’s epidemiological report. Of those, 141 people are currently hospitalized with 31 patients in intensive care and 20 patients on ventilators.
