CHANDIGARH: Former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh has finally spelt out his next political move by announcing his plan to launch a political party, besides hinting at a seat sharing arrangement with the BJP, provided the farmers’ issue is resolved, and an alliance with splinter Akali groups.
“Hopeful of a seat arrangement with BJP in 2022 Punjab Assembly polls if Farmers’ Protest is resolved in farmers’ interest. Also looking at alliance with like-minded parties such as breakaway Akali groups, particularly Dhindsa & Brahmpura factions,” Amarinder was quoted in a tweet by his media adviser Raveen Thukral on Tuesday.

“The battle for Punjab’s future is on. Will soon announce the launch of my own political party to serve the interests of Punjab & its people, including our farmers who’ve been fighting for their survival for over a year,” read another tweet.

Amarinder further said, “I will not rest till I can secure the future of my people and my state. Punjab needs political stability and protection from internal & external threats. I promise my people I will do what it takes to ensure its peace and security, which is at stake today.”
Amarinder had earlier announced he would be leaving the Congress and met Union home minister Amit Shah and national security advisor Ajit Doval last month, triggering speculation about his joining the BJP, which he had clarified he wouldn’t.
Amarinder had stepped down on September 18 to pre-empt what was widely being seen as a move to remove him from chief ministership through an emergency Congress Legislative Party meeting convened by the All India Congress Committee. He had met the governor less than half an hour before the crucial meeting.
