Jalandhar/ New Delhi:
Two young women, waiting to cross the road in Punjab’s Jalandhar this morning, stepped back as a car headed their way at great speed. But within moments, the car had hit them, leaving one dead and the other critically injured. The driver, a police inspector, has been arrested.
In chilling CCTV footage of the hit-and-run, the women are seen standing on the road divider, about to cross, when they appear to spot the white Maruti Brezza and react by trying to get out of the way.
But the car, driven allegedly by inspector Amrit Pal Singh, careens into them and disappears without breaking speed. The two women are thrown to the ground. The incident took place around 8.30 am on a road in the Jalandhar Cantonment area.
Navjot Kaur, who worked in a car showroom, died on the spot. The other woman is in hospital with serious wounds.
Soon after the incident, a large crowd gathered at the spot by the Jalandhar-Phagwara highway and blocked traffic.
“My daughter left for work in the morning and was crossing the road near a railway crossing when the car hit them. The sub-inspector should be charged with murder,” said Navjot’s mother Tejinder Kaur.
Local residents said they would not clear the highway unless Amrit Pal Singh was charged with murder. The protest disrupted traffic in parts of the city.
