Five Boilermakers earned All-Big Ten honors, the second-most in the team’s 24 seasons
WEST LAFAYETTE – Considered one of the top scorers in women’s college soccer, Purdue’s Sarah Griffith was named Big Ten Forward of the Year heading into the conference tournament.
The second-seeded Boilermakers will host No. 7 seed Ohio State on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Folk Field.
Griffith is the second player in program history to be recognized as the Big Ten Forward of the Year and the fifth to earn a player of the year honor. She leads the conference and ranks fourth nationally with 14 goals, tying for the most in program history.
In Big Ten play, Griffith led the league with nine goals, three game-winning goals and 20 points, with two assists. She scored a goal in eight of 10 conference games, had a point in all but one conference contest and had a goal in seven straight matchups.
The native of Naperville, Illinois has 24 career goals and nine game-winning goals.
Griffith is joined on the All-Big Ten First Team by sophomore midfielder Emily Mathews. Senior goalkeeper Marisa Bova and senior defender Skylurr Patrick were named to the second team. Senior midfielder Grace Walsh collected third-team honors.
Purdue’s five All-Big Ten Team honors are its second-most in the team’s 24 seasons. A total of four Boilermakers were recognized between 2011 and 2020.
If the Boilermakers beat the Buckeyes on Sunday, they’ll advance to the semifinals of the Big Ten tournament. The semifinals and finals will be hosted by the highest remaining seed.
Cross Country
The men’s team finished seventh and the women were ninth at the 2021 Big Ten Championships at Penn State on Friday.
Senior Curt Eckstein led the men with a 26th-place individual finish on the 5.2-mile course. Junior Emma Tate paced the women in 33rd place in the 6k race.
Wisconsin won the men’s title with 27 points, followed by Michigan with 79. Minnesota captured the women’s championship with 72 points with the Badgers finishing second.
Women’s swimming and diving
The Boilermakers won eight of the 16 events against Rutgers on Friday, defeating the Scarlet Knights 175.5 to 122.5 at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center.
Kate Beavon swept the distance freestyle events (500 and 1000). Maggie Love was victorious in the 100 breast and 200 individual medley along with a runner-up showing in the 200 backstroke. Sophie McAfee won the 1-meter diving and finished second in the 3-meter event.
Hannah Hill (50 free) and Macy Folick (200 free) won individual events and Purdue’s 200 medley relay team finished first.
The Boilermakers are back in action Friday hosting Michigan and Missouri for a co-ed triple dual at 2 p.m.
