Volleyball suffers second straight loss; freshman Tyler Downs wins two diving events at Notre Dame
WEST LAFAYETTE – Looking back and looking ahead at what’s happening around Purdue sports:
Women’s soccer
Looking back: The 18th-ranked Boilermakers put a cap on their record-setting regular season with a 2-0 victory over Indiana and retaining the Golden Boot for the seventh consecutive year. Sunday was Purdue’s 13th win, tied for the fourth-most in program history, and its eighth Big Ten victory, the most since 2007. The Boilermakers finished second in the conference standings with 24 points. Senior forward Ally Mussallem scored the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute and added an assist on the second goal in the 80th minute. Sophomore midfielder Emily Mathews scored the second goal, her sixth of the season. Senior goalkeeper Marisa Bova made two saves and recorded her 19th career shutout.
Looking ahead: The Boilermakers (13-3-2) are the No. 2 seed in the Big Ten tournament, which begins Oct. 31 at Folk Field in a matchup against No. 7 seed Ohio State at 3 p.m. If Purdue wins, it advances to the semifinals at the highest remaining seed after the quarterfinals are played.
Volleyball
Looking back: The seventh-ranked Boilermakers suffered their second straight loss Saturday, dropping a 3-1 decision at No. 9 Nebraska. Purdue had 16 blocks against the Huskers, led by freshman Raven Colin’s nine, including two solos. Caitlyn Newton had 16 kills to lead the offense and Jena Otec had 25 digs, marking her fourth 25-plus dig match.
Looking ahead: The Boilermakers return to action Wednesday against Northwestern (7 p.m.) and Wisconsin on Sunday (noon) at Holloway Gymnasium.
Swimming and Diving
Looking back: The men’s and women’s teams lost at Notre Dame. Freshman Tyler Downs captured the 1-meter and 3-meter diving titles. Purdue had the top four finishers in the 1-meter competition and the top five in the 3-meter event. Nikola Aćin (100 free) and Brady Samuels (50 free) also finished first in their events. On the women’s side, freshman Maggie Love posted three runner-up finishes (100 breaststroke, 200 backstroke and 200 individual medley).
Looking ahead: The women’s team host Rutgers on Friday (6 p.m.). The men’s team plays host Michigan and Missouri on Nov. 5.
Cross Country
Looking back: The men’s team won the Stan Lyons Bulldog Invitational behind freshman Alex Frey’s first-place finish. Frey was one of three Boilermakers to place in the top five. Purdue had 23 points and Butler was second with 32. The women’s team had two runners compete with Haley Mansfield finishing ninth and Emma Keesling 10th.
Looking ahead: The Big Ten Championships are scheduled for Friday at Penn State.
Baseball
Looking ahead: The program’s Halloween Bash is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Alexander Field. The event features trick-or-treating on the field following a three-inning costume scrimmage. Admission is free.
