Shenendehowa in Class A, South Glens Falls in Class B and Johnstown in Class C received the No. 1 seeds Saturday for the upcoming Section II field hockey tournaments.

Postseason action starts Tuesday and concludes with back-to-back-to-back championship games Oct. 31 at Schuylerville.

There were no Section II tournaments for field hockey during the 2020-21 academic year due to restrictions related to the novel coronavirus. In 2019, Guilderland, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake and Johnstown won area titles in classes A, B and C, respectively.

Burnt Hills, the No. 2 seed in this year’s Class B bracket, has won the last eight Section II Class B championships. The Spartans won this year’s Suburban Council regular-season championship.

BURNT HILLS INVITATIONAL

La Salle’s Gitch Hayes won the Division III boys’ cross country race at the Burnt Hills Invitational with a time of 14:51.7, a mark that ranks No. 7 all-time at Saratoga Spa State Park.

Hayes was one of six individual winners at the event. In the other boys’ races on the 3.04-mile course, Nick Lyndaker of Canton won the Division II race with a time of 15:43.8, while Tri-Valley’s Adam Furman won the Division I race at 15:33.9. In the girls’ races, Saratoga Springs’ Emily Bush won the Division III event at 17:23.0, Mohonasen’s Rachel Miller earned the Division II title with a time of 18:34.8 and Lake Placid’s Samantha Damico’s mark of 18:45.5 won the Division I competition.

In the team competition, victories in the girls’ competitions belonged to Saratoga Springs (Division III), Voorheesville (Division II) and Lake Placid (Division I), while boys’ team wins were earned by Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (Division III), Rutland (Division II) and Tri-Valley (Division I).

In its victory, the Burnt Hills boys’ team was led by Peter Fulgieri’s fourth-place finish in 15:34.8, while the Spartans had three other runners — Ryan Allison, Matthew Rounds and Nick Grock — record top-16 finishes. Behind Hayes and ahead of Fulgieri in the race were Niskayuna’s Julian Franjieh in second place at 15:14.0 and Saratoga Springs’ Ryan Bush in third at 15:17.5.

In Saratoga Springs’ win in the girls’ Division III race, the Blue Streaks had the top-five finishers and six of the top seven. The runner-up to Emily Bush was Mackenzie Hart (17:51.7), and Ella Kurto (17:52.2), Alycia Hart (18:10.7) and Sheridan Wheeler (18:15.8) followed. Bethlehem’s Rylee Davis (18:18.4) took sixth place and Saratoga Springs’ Anya Belisle (18:21.9) finished seventh.

Other Section II competitors to record top-five finishes were Scotia-Glenville’s Tyler Greene (boys’ Division II, second place, 15:47.3), Fonda-Fultonville’s Bennett Melita (boys’ Division II, fifth place, 16:33.2), Mayfield’s Cameron Abdella (boys’ Division I, fifth place, 16:59.3), Voorheesville’s Mariem Sayahi (girls’ Division II, second place, 18:53.4), Albany Academy’s Erin Boler (girls’ Division II, third place, 19:06.4), Scotia-Glenville’s Stephanie James (girls’ Division II, fifth place, 19:20.5), Greenwich’s Nina Sgambelluri (girls’ Division I, second place, 18:59.1), Hoosic Valley’s Sophia Squires (girls’ Division I, fourth place, 20:04.8) and Hoosic Valley’s Lily Czub (girls’ Division I, fifth place, 20:24.7).

GLENS FALLS’ DOCK LEADS GOLFERS

Twenty golfers advanced from Saturday’s round of play at Fairways of Halfmoon to play the course again Sunday with a chance to make Section II boys’ golf’s state team at stake.

Golfers among the top-nine finishers after scores from Saturday’s and Sunday’s rounds are combined will play in next June’s state championships at Mark Twain Golf Course in Elmira.

In Saturday’s action, Glens Falls’ Brayden Dock recorded the top score with a 76. Also advancing to continue to play were Greenville’s Trey Smith (79), Saratoga Springs’ Carter Sica (79), Shenendehowa’s Ryan Komp (80), Saratoga Springs’ Kellen Dean (80), Niskayuna’s Brayden Kehoe (81) and Vincent Liguori (82), Columbia’s Travis Taylor (82), Schuylerville’s Adam DeGregory (83), Saratoga Springs’ Declan Ladd (84), Schoharie’s Luke Morgenstein (84), Albany Academy’s James Gerdeman (84) and Ben Heidbrier (85), Hudson Falls’ Ben Swartz (85), Queensbury’s Dorin Chang (85) and Tanner Fearman (85), Averill Park’s David Mooradian (85), Shaker’s Jack Hoblock (86), Hoosick Falls’ Aiden Fleming (86) and CBA’s CJ Strong (86).

BARBOZA STARS FOR BROADALBIN-PERTH

In a Foothills Council girls’ soccer game, Broadalbin-Perth defeated Gloversville 5-0. Mianna Barboza offered two goals and two assists, Jill Sassanella contributed one goal and one assist, and Brooke Bush and Jackie Fisher each had a goal. Carissa Calderone had an assist.

Emma Murray, Mia DiBlasi and Mazie Neville each scored a goal in Saratoga Springs’ 3-1 win against Ballston Spa.

Mia Van Dyke had two goals in Colonie’s 7-0 win against Albany.

Averill Park and Niskayuna tied 0-0 in a game halted midway through the second half due to deteriorating field conditions. Maddie Mills made three saves and Anna Joyce made one for Niskayuna, while Michelina Lombardi stopped six shots for Averill Park.

Shenendehowa and Burnt Hills also tied 0-0.

QUINTET LEADS SARATOGA SPRINGS

Five different players scored in Saratoga Springs’ 5-0 boys’ soccer win against Ballston Spa. Joe Radovic, Xavier Ruscio, Ryan Farr, Evan Hallett, Charlie Barnes each registered a goal, while Radovic also added an assist. Eli Lewis made three saves in recording the shutout.

Ben Tymeson had two goals and an assist in Shenendehowa’s 3-0 win against Burnt Hills.

Colin Brant had a goal and an assist in Shaker’s 3-1 win against CBA. Waqas Hagali contributed two assists.

Josh Catanzarita had three goals and an assist in Waterford-Halfmoon’s 5-0 win against Berlin/New Lebanon in Wasaren League play.

Britain Goodemote scored two goals and assisted Masen Valachovic’s goal in Mayfield’s 3-0 win against Canajoharie in a Western Athletic Conference game. Aiden Martuscello made four saves in the shutout.

QUEENSBURY FOOTBALL FALLS

In a non-classification football game, Maine-Endwell of Section IV defeated Queensbury 30-7. Maine-Endwell led 7-0 at halftime, but Ethan Sadler rushed for two of Maine-Endwell’s three touchdowns in the third quarter as Queensbury fell behind 30-0. Michael Mancini rushed for a team-high 101 yards and a touchdown, while Donnie Hamer also scored a touchdown in the win. For Queensbury, Zion Freeman scored on an 8-yard run in the fourth quarter, and Aidan Bleibtrey rushed for a game-high 102 yards on nine carries.
