Rovio Entertainment Oyj on Thursday posted a higher-than-expected third-quarter net profit as revenue was boosted by a strong performance in its key live games.
The company behind the Angry Birds mobile-gaming franchise reported a net profit of 11.6 million euros ($13.5 million) for the quarter from EUR9.2 million a year earlier, as revenue rose 5.2% to EUR71.4 million.
A FactSet analysts’ forecast had expected net profit of EUR6.8 million on revenue of EUR69.6 million.
“Our new product pipeline is healthy with Angry Birds Journey and Supernatural City continuing their soft launch and our first Moomin game preparing to join them later this year,” said Chief Executive Alex Pelletier-Normand. “In addition, we will see our Angry Birds brand strategy unfold in different formats and platforms.”
The Finnish developer said user acquisition investments in the quarter, or the cost of advertising and marketing to attract players, rose 19% to EUR18.1 million in the quarter, while total gross bookings rose 3.3% to EUR66.7 million. Gross bookings represent in-app purchases and in-app advertising sales.
