A quick recap of the past week of athletics at The College of Wooster:

CROSS COUNTRY

Winning was the theme on Saturday, with Wooster’s men’s cross country team capturing the team title and senior Isabelle Hoover breaking the tape in the women’s race at the Muskingum University Invitational.

Wooster’s three through five harriers were the difference on the men’s side, as the Fighting Scots’ 33 team points edged out West Virginia Wesleyan College’s 36. Senior Alex DeLong’s 11th-place time of 29:49.4 led that trio. First-year Will Callender was Wooster’s top finisher at fifth, and he crossed at 28:50.4.

The men’s team title marked the first for the program at a traditional meet since the Scots won the seven-team Otterbein University Invitational in 2014.

The women’s race came down to two of the North Coast Athletic Conference’s elite runners battling for the first-place finish, and at the end, it was Hoover’s 23:55.6 edging out Kenyon College distance ace Emma Becker’s 24:00.1.

VOLLEYBALL (12-5, 1-1 NCAC)

Senior Seven Townsel tapped down an overpass to cap a dominant 10-2 run that kept Saturday afternoon’s sweep intact, as Wooster beat DePauw University 25-17, 25-17, 26-24, in what marked the Scots’ first win in the series since the Tigers joined the NCAC in 2011.

Junior Hayley Nash logged five straight kills at one point in the second set, and she led all players with 13 kills. Nash and junior Sydney Fitzcharles finished with 15 digs each, and Fitzcharles accounted for five of Wooster’s eight aces.

Earlier in the week, Wooster beat Marietta College 21-25, 25-20, 25-18, 26-24. In that match, Nash (15), senior Katie Billetdeaux (14), junior Emily Gail (10), and Townsel (10) all finished with double-digit kills.

WOMEN’S GOLF

Wooster improved by 30 strokes, marking the biggest bounce back in program history, and the Scots climbed from fifth-place to second-place on the final day of the Wooster Fall Invitational. Wooster opened with a 360 and fired a 330 in the final round to finish at 690.

Senior Kayla Audette, sophomore Melissa Burtscher, and first-year Ally Siewert all tied for low honors within the team at 168, and that was the fourth-place score. Audette’s 79 in the final round marked a new collegiate-best and a 10-stroke improvement from Saturday’s round. Junior Riley Thorr had Wooster’s biggest drop on Sunday, and her 87 marked a new collegiate-low. Thorr finished at 191.

SWIMMING & DIVING

Wooster’s women’s swimming and diving team knocked off Cleveland State University, while the men finished second at the season-opening Viking Relay Challenge.

Senior Molly Likins, first-year Hallie Findlan, senior Mia Chen, and sophomore Emma Connors scored Wooster’s first win of the meet in the 500 freestyle relay (4:52.44). Connors earned triple-winner honors on the day. She led of Wooster’s winning 3×500 freestyle relay, with junior Kay Wetmore and first-year Ollie Bream rounding out the Scots’ 16:30.61. Later, Findlan, sophomore Maddie Becker, Connors, and Likins’ 1:41.51 beat out Cleveland State’s 1:43.09 in the traditional 200 freestyle relay.

Wooster’s men had four third-place efforts, and sophomore Josh Pearson was in on three of them.

WOMEN’S SOCCER (5-5-1, 0-0-1 NCAC)

Wooster junior Katie Schumacher broke the program record for fastest consecutive goals during Wednesday’s 3-2 loss at Baldwin Wallace University, as she scored twice in a 10-second span in the 89th minute.

Wooster and DePauw played to a scoreless draw on Saturday. It marked the fourth straight meeting between the programs that has gone to extra time.

MEN’S SOCCER (6-4-1, 0-1-1 NCAC)

Wooster dropped a pair of 2-1 contests on the week. On Wednesday, the Scots became just the second team this fall to score on the University of Mount Union. The Purple Raiders’ ‘keeper punched a ball out to senior Max Hill who kicked it in for his team-leading sixth goal of the season.

Junior Moody Saadi scored for the Scots in Saturday’s 2-1 loss at DePauw.

FIELD HOCKEY (4-3)

Wooster lost 2-1 at Kenyon College and 3-2 in overtime at Wittenberg College last week. Seniors Caitlyn O’Connor and Syd Schuster teamed up for a scoring play at Kenyon, and it marked the 10th O’Connor-to-Schuster or Schuster-to-O’Connor goal of their careers.

At Wittenberg, Schuster led senior Katie Agatucci on a breakaway with just Agatucci and the goalie. Agatucci beat the Tigers’ ‘keeper for her team-high fifth goal of the season.
