The Section 9 Athletic Council passed Thursday a resolution to postpone all fall scholastic sports to early next year due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic, and has established Nov. 30 as the start for winter sport practices.
All fall sports will be pushed to an abbreviated “Fall II” season in March and April of 2021. In the interim, offseason workouts may be held starting Sept. 21.
Late Wednesday, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association moved the “high-risk” sports of football, girls volleyball and competitive cheer to practice start dates of March 1. Thursday’s decision by Section 9 covers all fall sports, including soccer, cross country, field hockey, girls swimming and girls tennis.
The exact practice start dates for the “Fall II” and spring seasons are still to be determined. The 2021 spring season will be contested in May and June.

The council’s decision was based the safety of students and many of the Section 9 school districts conducting all classes remotely,” stated Section 9 executive director Greg Ranson in a press release.
“As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, Section 9, in conjunction with our school districts, will monitor developments and make changes when needed,” Ransom said.
This month’s offseason workouts can start with approval from each school district. The workouts must follow rules established by NYSPHSAA and the state Department of Health guidelines.
