Seether has given us a bit of a mouthful with the title of its eighth studio album, “Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum” (see the translation below). And the quartet has given us an earful of tuneful, heavy rock as well.

The set, which comes out Friday, Aug. 28, is Seether’s first in three years and marks the addition of guitarist Clint Lowery. For Shaun Morgan, Seether’s South African-born frontman and co-founder, it also offers a chance to vent a bit about the state of the world — personal (his father died last year), political and of course, the toll wrought by the coronavirus pandemic.

The band is largely in dry-dock, of course, but Morgan and company have a few things up their proverbial sleeves — including a virtual concert and possibly even another album sooner rather than later…

• While unquestionably heavy, Morgan, 41, says by phone from Nashville that the new album, “started off being a very different vibe” than what we’re hearing now. “Some of the riffs on this album came from when I Found out my dad had cancer, and I was so furious I went up in my studio and that was my way of venting. So some of the stuff was like that — really heavy, really angry. But there was no guiding principle really, other than to make stuff I was proud of or stuff I wanted to hear.”

• The album title is Latin for “if you want peace, prepare for war,” which Morgan feels is an apt phrase after all that’s continuing to happen during 2020. “If I was to put a chapter heading on this year, that’s what I would use. “It just seems like everything is falling apart. I’d be hard pressed to hear of things that are NOT falling apart, in any facet of life. Certainly my family is great, but there’s been some really tough times there. Everything just seems like you’ve got to fight for it this year.”

• There was some discussion about “if it was the right time” to release a new album, but Morgan says he’s decided that he’s excited to have “Si Vis Pacem…” coming out now. “I put myself in the fans’ shows and thought, ‘You know what? I’m at home right now and my playlists are all the same songs. That’s cool, but I’d love to hear some new stuff.’ There’s nothing else going on, right? You’ve seen explosive sales of game consoles, and video game sales are higher than they’ve ever been. We’re all stuck at home looking for entertainment so, yeah, it is the right time.”

• Though he’s done some solo livestreamed performances since the pandemic hit, Morgan promises that Seether is approaching its upcoming “Locked & Live” show as if it’s a full-on concert. “I appreciate that people are streaming and playing for audiences and sitting on their couches or home studios or in their garages and living rooms. But this is our first full-band stream and it’s release weekend, so we wanted to make it a big deal. So we’ve got a full production setup of 50 or 60 moving lights, we’ve got 11 different cameras. We’ve got a drone filming some shots. We want to make it the closes you can get to actually being at a show. If you put this on a TV and crank your system, it’s gonna sound like and hopefully feel like you’re part of the experience. As a sort of stopgap measure until we can go back on the road, this is something we felt was good to do.

• Seether has five songs left over from the “Si Vis Pacem…” sessions, according to Morgan, which he considers a head start on the group’s next album. “I’ve been writing. I’m trying to branch out and try different stuff, maybe for on my own, but I’ve written some sort of Seether-type stuff, too. We bounce around ideas all the time. With nothing but time on my hands it would seem wasteful to not at least write songs. So, depending on how long this drags on, I’m gonna use the time and maybe we’ll have another album come out next year. We may as well stay productive.”
