It’s a waiting game for manager Vinny D’Ambrosio III and his staff at Showplace Entertainment Center.

The crew at the Travis center is awaiting word from the governor on when they can open.

Even though parts of the city are in Phase 4 and some businesses are opened, bowling centers and gyms still remained closed because they are considered high risk for spreading COVID-19.

“We are just waiting patiently,” said D’Ambrosio, whose has been the desk manager at Showplace since 2004. “We are waiting for them to tell us when to open.”

The center is closed now, but had been open from mid-March to early July, even though patrons were not permitted into the center.

“I was in and out of the center and we were able to do some maintenance,” said D’Ambrosio. “The pizzeria was open, too.”

The Island’s only other bowling alley, Rab’s Country Lanes, is in the same boat, waiting to open.

And D’Ambrosio and his staff will be ready for when the bowlers return.

“We have hand sanitizers and (social-distancing) signage all over the center,” said D’Ambrosio. “We didn’t put up dividers, but we will be sanitizing the place.”

D’Ambrosio is hoping the bowlers will be able to return to the center by Sept. 1, just in time for the new season which lasts 36 weeks.

The previous season was cut short by about 12 weeks, which means a big revenue hit for the center like other businesses on Staten Island.

D’Ambrosio says most of his keglers are anxious to get back on the lanes and he can’t wait to hear the crack of pins on the alleys from his front-desk area.

“They miss us and we miss them,” D’Ambrosio said of the bowlers. “Hopefully, we will get the word to open and we will be good to go.”
