A pair of promising freshmen and childhood friends battled it out at No. 1 singles in the MCAL girls tennis semifinal between top-seeded Redwood and No. 4 Archie Williams on Friday.
Redwood’s Jordan Marotto emerged with a 6-4, 6-3 win against Carly Amborn in the most competitive match of the day, capping a 6-1 victory for the Giants. The two players met once in the regular season, with Marotto pulling out a 10-8 super-tiebreaker.
The win sends Redwood into Monday’s final against Branson at Novato High. The Giants also got singles wins from Julia Laury and Jennie Liu — with Laury’s victory securing the match for Redwood.
Ana Fatjo picked up the lone victory for the Peregrine Falcons, defeating Sonya Cowan, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2 singles.

Anna Lardner and Anna Rende won the top two singles matches as second-seeded Branson swept Tam 7-0 in the MCAL semifinals on Friday.
Lardner picked up a 7-5, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles over Gabriella Plonowski. Audrey Gilmor and Mirabel Arlander also had singles wins for the Bulls.
Redwood won both meetings with Branson during the regular season, securing a 4-3 win in the first clash by sweeping the singles matches. Redwood took the second meeting, 6-1.
