St. Louis City SC sports director Lutz Pfannenstiel made his first hires, enlisting Bernhard Peters and Mike Forde to work on on-field operations.

Peters, who has worked with Pfannenstiel in the past with German club TSG Hoffenheim, was named youth academy development consultant and will work with Pfannenstiel on developing the expansion MLS team’s youth academy. Peters was sporting director for another German club, Hamburger SV, and director of high performance at Hoffenheim.

Forde will consult with the team to “establish and maintain a model for high-performance and sustained culture.” He is executive chairman of Sportsology, which is billed as a firm that “helps sports teams lay the foundations for success by transforming organizational systems and behaviors.” Sportsology has worked with other pro franchises, including LAFC of Major League Soccer, which reached the Western Conference final in its second season. Forde’s resume also includes six years working with Chelsea of the English Premier League as director of football operations. (Tom Timmermann)

Ewan claims Tour stage win: Australian rider Caleb Ewan slalomed through the bunch to win a sprint finish and claim the third stage of the Tour de France on Monday, while Julian Alaphilippe held onto the yellow jersey that he claimed with a dramatic stage victory a day earlier.

With about 100 meters to go, Ewan trailed five other riders before slinging himself through a narrow slice of road near the advertising barriers on the right side of the street. Then — after more than five hours in the saddle — Ewan darted to the left to overcome Sam Bennett and claim his fourth career stage win in the Tour by more than a wheel. (AP)
