Kolkata: Debanjan Roy spent his Sunday evening in front of the laptop and television screen. No, he was not working on his weekly off but the ardent Manchester United fan was trying to catch glimpses of the clash against Liverpool, as well as the big-ticket India-Pakistan T20 World Cup match. Thousands of sports enthusiasts across the city faced the dilemma on how to watch the two big football games between Manchester United-Liverpool and Barcelona-Real Madrid, along with India-Pakistan T20 match.
“It was a good problem to have for a sports enthusiast like me,” smiled Roy. “Both the football games were in the evening and the timings clashed with India-Pakistan match. Though I am a big football fan but can’t sacrifice on the T20 World Cup match for anything,” added Roy.
The match between Manchester United and Liverpool FC in Old Trafford kicked off at 9.30 pm in India while the one between Barcelona and Real Madrid started at 7.45 pm. Priyesh Sharma utilised the breaks between the overs judiciously and changed the channels to catch up on the latest football score. “I switched channels during the breaks between overs to check the football scores. I will watch the rerun of the matches on OTT platforms later,” said Sharma.
For sports fans it is something to rejoice that events are making a comeback after major cricket and football tournaments were cancelled owing to the pandemic since March 2020. “We were devoid of any sporting action for almost two years. So many sporting events happening around the globe is a good indication,” said Mayank Agarwal, a private bank employee and a Liverpool fan. “But on Sunday, I watched the India-Pakistan match because one never knows when these two nations will play each other again.”
Bars and pubs also tried to cash in on the frenzy. “All TV screens at our outlet played the India-Pakistan match. But we could not allow many people due to the restrictions,” said the manager of a pub in Salt Lake.
