Trinity boys win Marion Invite, girls take third

MARION — The Hutchinson Trinity boys cross country team won the Marion Invitational on Thursday thanks to two top-five finishes.

Jonah Godina led the way with a third-place finish and a time of 18:56.79. Godina was followed closely behind by teammate Brendan Kiser, who placed fourth with a time of 18:57.14.

The Celtics had two additional runners place in the top 20. Anthony Clennan placed 14th at 19:53.95, and Ryan Zipprich finished in 19th place with a time of 20:11.14.

Garrett Hageman was the next highest finisher for the Celtics, placing 30th with a time of 21:12.87.

Brennan Leighton (47th, 23:12.38) and Xavier Ryan (48th, 23:26.21) rounded out the Trinity lineup.

The Trinity boys won the invitational with 48 points. Valley Center placed second with 75 points, and Moundridge rounded out the top three with 82 points.

The Trinity girls placed two runners in the top 20, and all six runners in the top 30.

Emma Vogel placed 17th with a time of 25:02.08 to lead the Celtics. Teammate Alexa Morales was not too far behind in 19th place at 25:37.91.

Taitlyn Heimerman placed 22nd at 27:02.55, Elizabeth Springer took 25th at 27:47.99, and Lauren Penner rounded out the Trinity lineup at 27th with a time of 28:47.49.

The Trinity girls placed third with 70 points. Valley Center (32) and Remington (24) rounded out the top three.

Nickerson fifth, Trinity sixth at Hillsboro Invite

HILLSBORO — The Nickerson High School and Hutchinson Trinity girls tennis teams competed at the Hillsboro Invitational on Thursday.

At No. 1 singles, Nickerson’s Olivia Rome won her first match over Trinity’s Gianna Schoenfeld before settling for fourth place.

Nickerson received a fifth-place finish from its No. 1 doubles team of Carly Bontrager and Lanaya Hada, who went 2-1 on the day.

At No. 2 doubles, Alyssa Rosenberg and Ria Shah also went 2-1 for fifth. The Nickerson duo defeated Trinity’s Mary Ediger and Camila Rodriguez, 8-5, in the fifth-place match.

Zoe Coonce at No. 2 singles rounded out the Panther lineup with a fourth-place performance.

Trinity’s Hayley Hughes and Isabelle Shank won their first match and took fourth at No. 1 doubles. The Trinity duo lost in a tiebreaker in the third-place match against Douglass’ top duo.

Gianna Schoenfeld went 1-2 for sixth place at No. 1 singles, while Allison Palacioz went 1-2 for seventh at No. 2 singles.

The Panthers placed fifth out of eight teams with 35 points. Trinity was sixth with 24 points.

Circle won the invitational with 70 points, while Hillsboro (53) and Douglass (42) rounded out the top three.
