Lucknow: In sync with the central and UP governments’ focus on promotion of sports, the Lucknow regional centre of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) is bolstering infrastructure on a war footing.
According to SAI authorities, a state-of-the-art wrestling hall is ready to provide world-class training facilities to wrestlers. Construction of a new sports hostel is also underway which is likely to be ready by the year-end.
“SAI centre is built on a sprawling 65 acre land and already has five national centres of excellence for hockey, wrestling, taekwondo, weightlifting and athletics,” said Sanjay Saraswat, executive director of SAI Centre, Lucknow.
“We got a new wrestling hall constructed earlier this year. Built at a cost of Rs 7.5 crore, the hall is equipped with world-class facilities. Though the facility is yet to be inaugurated, women wrestlers who participated in the Tokyo Olympics carried out their practice here,” he said.
Saraswat added that Union minister for sports and youth affairs, Anurag Thakur, would formally inaugurate the facility soon.
He said the construction of a 300-bed sports hostel was underway which was likely to be completed by December.
Asked why most of the wrestlers coming to the centre for practice were from Haryana and not Uttar Pradesh, he said wrestlers from Haryana were focussed and were getting full support of their families.
“Anshu Malik and Sarita, who recently won silver and bronze in the world wrestling championship in Oslo (Norway), had been training here for the last 4-5 years,” he said.
“We are working hard to improve infrastructure at SAI Centre. It is due to constant efforts that our players are performing well in the Olympics and world championships. We have also sought funds from the central governments for upgradation of existing facilities,” Saraswat added.
