NEW PALESTINE — The New Palestine volleyball team defeated Hoosier Heritage Conference foe New Castle, 4-1, on Thursday at New Palestine High School.
The Dragons won by set scores of 25-21, 25-22, 22-25, 25-12.
The Dragons had a strong all-around effort, with Regan Kleiman recording 17 kills and three blocks. Lauren Wilson had 14 kills and three blocks.
Bella Brownfield had six kills and three aces. Jada Hausz added five kills and a block, while setter Isabella Gizzi had 37 assists, five kills and two aces.
Grace Myers led a strong defensive game with 24 digs. She also had four aces. Honour Mallory had 11 digs and Trinity Oertel 10. McKaylah Flagle had nine digs and three aces.
“Great team win for us tonight,” Dragons coach Kelli Gabehart said. “That was the first time we have beaten New Castle in at least 10 years. We battled through the first three sets and really took it to them in the fourth set. We had role players step up and score more points than they usually do and that helped propel us to a win.”
The Dragons are now 13-2 on the season and 3-1 in the HHC.
Marauders sweep Wildcats
The Mt. Vernon volleyball team hit the road again on Thursday night to take on Lawrence North.
The visiting Class 4A sixth-ranked Marauders, according to Maxpreps, pulled off the 3-0 sweep and improved to 18-3 on the season.
Mt. Vernon won by set scores of 25-17, 25-23, 25-18.
Rylee Ugen guided the offense with 39 assists. Cecilia Bulmahn led the offense with 23 kills and Meredith Hohnbaum came up big with a career-high 11 kiils on 17 swings.
Delaney Bowser supplied a match-high 24 digs. The defense was key as four players had double-digit digs. Abby Herman had 14, Libby Gee-Weiler and Bulmahn had 10 each.
Boys Tennis
Dragons win on senior day
The New Palestine tennis team celebrated its senior day Thursday with a 4-1 victory over Bishop Chatard.
Colin Darley had the match of the night, coming from behind to win 6-2, 7-6 (3). Zach Au had a aggressive 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles.
Ezra Schwier also won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. At doubles, seniors Devon Bird and Zayden Stiller dominated their foes with a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
The Dragons’ record in dual matches improved to 15-3.
Boys Soccer
Flashes shut out Dragons
The New Palestine boys soccer team dropped a 5-0 decision Thursday to Franklin Central at Kelso Stadium.
The Dragons and Flashes played a fairly even first half, with Franklin Central scoring on a 30-yard shot that dropped over the goalkeeper into the top netting.
Franklin Central scored three times in a 10-minute span early in the second half – the latter on a penalty kick – and later added another goal.
The Dragons are now 5-8-0 on the season.
Girls Soccer
Cougars fall in shootout
The Greenfield-Central girls soccer team struggled on offense Thursday night and fell to HHC foe Shelbyville in a penalty-kick shootout, 4-3.
Greenfield-Central maintained possession throughout the game but could not finish one of their 19 shots on goal.
Goalkeeper Jessica Merritt was asked to make just one save the entire game on defense. The Cougars fall back below .500 at 5-6 overall and are 2-4 in the HHC.
