The high school sports season seems to really begin this week in a familar sense.

That’s because football starts on Friday.

Technically, already, there’s been two weeks of competiton in high school golf, but now there’s boys and girls soccer and boys and girls cross country beginning their action. Next week, volleyball joins the schedule for the public schools.

It’s full go for high school sports teams in West Virginia that have been shut down since the middle of March because of coronavirus pandemic, which is having an effect on this weeks’ football schedule.

As it stood early Sunday, three of the Eastern Panhandle’s three teams wouldn’t be playing fooball this week.

The Musselman-Martinsburg game is off because of the positive COVID-19 test for someone affiliated with the team. Jefferson wasn’t going to play either, as an orange color in the governor’s COVID scheme, hovers over Kanawah County, where Jefferson’s opponent, George Washington, is located.

However, it was announced later Sunday that Musselman and Jefferson would meet up in the first week to fill those open dates, taking advantage of the two local team’s losing opening-day opponents.

There will be football games locally on Friday.

Spring Mills travels to Washington in an EPAC game what will put new Cardinals coach Josh Sims on display against a team operating for the second year in the single-wing offense.

In other local games, Berkeley Springs hosts Keyser, which is under the direction of a new coach, and Hedgesville heads to Brooke in the Eagles first game under new coach Matt Faircloth.

Some of the other action begins Wednesday with a cross country triangular featuring Washington and Musselman at Spring Mills.

Jefferson is scheduled to host a cross country invitational on Saturday at Sam Michaels Park.

Soccer begins around the Eastern Panhandle on Thursday, as boys and girls teams play.

Among some of the games are Washington at Martinsburg in boys play and Spring Mills at Musselman.

Golf continues as there are a pair of nine-hole matches, Tuesday at Locust Hill and Thursday at Cress Creek.

In some cases, schedules of particular sports for schools haven’t been updated on the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission website.
