University of Jamestown’s Sydney Ellingson and Ruben Zepeda have been named Jamestown Optimist Club Athletes of the Week.
Ellingson, a senior libero for UJ’s womens volleyball team, led the Jimmies with 20 digs in the four-set win over Dordt University Tuesday evening. The senior popped up nine more in the team’s sweep of Valley City State University (VCSU) Wednesday. Ellingson also tallied 27 digs in the win over Morningside on Sept. 26. In her Jimmie career, the Langdon North Dakota native has recorded 929 digs.
During last weekend’s trip to Nebraska, Zepeda racked up three goals for the UJ men’s soccer team. Zepeda scored both goals in the 5-2 loss to Hastings College and once in the 3-1 win over Doane University.
Gage Orr, a junior at JHS, was been contributing to the Blue Jay tennis team all season. Orr closed out the regular season with a pair of wins in singles against Minot and Williston. Orr helped the Jays to a 3-2 win in the West Regional Tournament quarterfinals defeating Mandan’s B. Helbling 6-3, 6-1. The Jays took on Bismarck High in the WDA tournament’s state-qualifying match where Orr served up a 6-3, 6-0 win over the competition.
Meghan Ford, a Blue Jay senior, won the girls’ varsity cross country race in the early session of the RM Stoudt Invitational in Jamestown on Saturday. By covering the 5000-meter course in 18 minutes, 6 seconds, Ford won the race by 1 minute, 43 seconds. Ford set a personal season record for the course eclipsing her previous best by 1:37. The two-time defending state cross country champion led her team to a second-place finish.
