CADIZ — The conditions at Cadiz Country Club, on Monday, were quite challenging. It was playing upwards of 6500 yards, tough pin placements and the winds were howling from seemingly every direction.

None of that fazed St. Clairsville.

The Red Devils fired a round of 321 to claimed the Division II sectional title and earn their spot in next week’s district tournament at Eagle Sticks Golf Course near Zanesville.

“We’re very excited with how we played (Monday),” St. C. Head coach Ryan Clifford said. “All five guys shot well. When your fifth score is an 86 and it plays at the top for a lot of the other teams … that’s a good day.”

Indeed.

The title allows the Red Devils to check another item off their goal sheet. They’ve already won the Buckeye 8 and OVAC Class 4A title. Now, they set their sights on going after a state tournament berth.

“There’s one more big box to check,” Clifford said. “We’re going to play Eagle Sticks at least once and we have a good idea who the teams are that going to be there, and we’re excited.”

While St. Clairsville shot well as a team, the Red Devils, who went off in the early groups, set the tone when senior Will Foster turned in his card in with a round of even-par, 72. His card included a trio of birdies on the front side and a 35. He shot 1-over, 37 on the inward nine.

“I’ve been Will’s coach for three years and I know that’s the most impressive round we’ve had since I’ve been the coach,” Clifford said. “He was great off the tee and never in major trouble to where he had to scramble for par.”

Foster, who won the OVAC 4A individual title earlier this month at Oglebay, was one of just three players in the field of 70 to break 80.

“I didn’t think an even-par round was out there when I started the round, but I made a ton of putts that, honestly, I probably shouldn’t have made,” Foster said. “Whenever I play well, usually my putting is on. For the most part, I was able to avoid trouble. I am proud of myself for a 72. The wind really made it tough, so that score feels much lower than it was.”

The Red Devils put all five of their players inside the top 20 overall. Senior Saul Crist (82), freshmen Andrew Abel (83) and freshman Brodi Foster (84) rounded out the 321. Frosh Evan Fix posted an 86.

For the fifth straight season and third in Division II, Barnesville is headed for the district.

The Shamrocks posted a 349, which was good enough for third overall.

Fueling the Shamrocks was senior standout Carter Wells, who finished second overall with a 77.

Other Shamrock scorers were Dryden Bauman (82), Jude Hannahs (88) and Colton Hines (102).

Along with four teams, four individuals not on qualifying teams, also punched their tickets.

Among that quartet was Union Local junior Beezer Porter. He checked in with a round of 82 to extend his season.
