Greg Marecek, a businessman who was an integral figure in the development of St. Louis sports-talk radio and the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame, died Sunday at age 71. His passing, from multiple organ failure, was announced by the Sports Hall — which he founded and served as its president.
Over the years he was a sportswriter, early in his career at the now-defunct Suburban Journals, then moved into television production and other media endeavors.
Marecek was the lead man for Missouri Sports Radio when it owned KFNS (590 AM) from 1998-2004, some of the station’s best years before the group sold it to an Atlanta-based company. In 2009, he founded the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame and was a tireless promoter of that organization.
“He was the major driving force,” in the Hall’s creation and growth, said Tim Moore, its vice president. “He built it from scratch with the help of some good people like Ron Jacober and Myron Holtzman. That would not have happened “without Greg and his vision.”
Marecek also was known for his efforts to keep alive memories of the the NBA’s St. Louis Hawks — who moved to Atlanta in 1968. And he is a member of the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.
Funeral arrangements are pending. He is survived by his wife, Helen, and three children — John Marecek, Leslie Marecek Thomas and Jennifer Marecek, as well as six granddaughters.
