Manchester City’s Phil Foden was given an England debut but failed to make an impact

Raheem Sterling scored a 90th-minute penalty as 10-man England earned a late Nations League win at Iceland, who also ended the game a man down.

Sterling’s low shot was blocked on the line by the arm of Sverrir Ingason, who was sent off, with the Manchester City forward converting from the spot.

In a thrilling finish, Iceland themselves were given a penalty in injury-time, but Birkir Bjarnason blazed his chance to equalise way wide.

England created very little during the contest and had defender Kyle Walker sent off with 20 minutes remaining for a dangerous lunge.

Gareth Southgate’s side face Denmark in their second group game on Tuesday (19:45 BST).

More to follow.
