This new series, set in contemporary Spain, offers thrilling spiritual battles that feature fiery demons and the secret Order of the Cruciform Sword. Based on comics by Ben Dunn, it begins with the transference of a halo that has given super powers to its bearer since an angel first gave it to Areala of Cordoba during the First Crusade. Following in the lofty legacy of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” by building its world around a fast-talking, bright-eyed young woman chosen to fight ancient evil, “Warrior Nun” offers  exciting action and intense spirituality. Alba Baptista is a revelation as Ava Silva, who becomes resurrected as the Warrior Nun after ambushed allies hide the halo inside her corpse. Ava’s upbeat approach to life puts you instantly on her side: We root for her both when she handles fellow holy warriors who resent her as a newcomer, and when she fights hellish demons and all-too-worldly corporate villains. Baptista exhilarates us through Ava’s expressions of pure joy as she, who had once been a quadriplegic confined to a grim orphanage, can now jump and dance and feel sand run through her fingers. Tristan Ulloa is terrific as Father Vincent, a kindly priest who prepares Ava to fight demons and hardliners in his organization. Other excellent performances include Toya Turner’s Shotgun Mary, a spiritual warrior with street smarts and a lively attitude; Kristina Tonteri-Young as the serious but kind Sister Beatrice; and Thekla Reuten as Jillian Salvius, the malevolently intelligent CEO of Arq-tech, which has been using the mysterious metal Divinium to amass technological power.
