A potentially fatal condition, experts and studies for a long time have ruled diet, physical activity, smoking and alcoholism as key factors that impact stroke risk. Although a condition uncommon amongst people younger than 40 years of age, stroke is often triggered by abnormally high blood pressure levels. Although most risk factors are modifiable, there is one that significantly increases risk.
The drink that increases stroke risk significantly
Light or moderate, alcohol intake increases blood pressure and overtime spikes stroke risk as per a genetic study published in The Lancet. Researchers from UK and China followed 500,000 Chinese people for a 10-years period for this study. At present, 16 per cent male and 20 per cent female population in UK suffer a stroke at least once in their lifetime. Therefore, if even a small group of 100 non-drinking people started to enjoy a drink or two per day, the risk increases by two strokes.
As per an expert from the University of Cambridge, every half a bottle of wine consumed in a day increases stroke risk by 38 per cent.
Alcohol intake and stroke risk: The link explained
Alcohol intake is strongly linked to stroke risk of a person; and according to a recent study, it was discovered that one or two drinks in a day can increase stroke risk by 10 to 15 per cent. And for those drinking over four servings of alcohol, stroke risk hypes to 35 per cent.
Alcohol, besides stroke risk, is also linked to an increase risk of the following:
- Obesity
- Liver damage
- Hypertension
- Atrial fibrillation
- Diabetes
Furthermore, experts found no concrete link between lowered stroke risks even upon limited alcohol intake. According to a University of Oxford professor, claims that wine and beer can have protective effects against stroke are not borne out. Instead, the more a person drinks, the higher is their risk of stroke. Studies and research have additionally blamed moderate quantities of alcohol for increased stroke risk and reveal that there is no safe amount of alcohol to consume when it comes to lowering stroke risk.
