Cortland, N.Y. — SUNY Cortland will suspend all athletic activity for at least one week following an uptick in the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases on campus.
The college also banned three Greek life organizations from having any in-person events on- or off-campus for the next two weeks.
The measures come after the number of cases rose from six to 22 in the last week, officials said in a written notice to the community Thursday. The cancellation comes out of “an abundance of caution,” officials wrote.
“Although the vast majority of students are asymptomatic, this uptick in cases is cause for real concern, given the rapid growth in caseloads we’ve seen on other campuses, most notably SUNY Oneonta, which has recorded 700 positive cases,” the note said.
The competitive season for fall sports had previously been canceled at SUNY Cortland, but team practices and activities were allowed to continue under new guidelines. Those practices and activities are now cancelled.
Other restrictions on campus life may be necessary if the increase continues, the note said.
School officials will reassess the situation in a week to decide whether to reinstate athletics.
Across New York, colleges are struggling with how to safely restart in-person education.
SUNY Oneonta cancelled in-person classes and sent students home less than a week after the first day of school. The campus saw a massive, immediate outbreak that now includes more than 600 confirmed cases.
School and town officials blamed the outbreak on a handful of off-campus parties the first weekend after students returned.
Students also were not required to show a negative Covid-19 test before returning to campus — something other schools have mandated.
