BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – The Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) released its plan to return to competition in 2020 during a webinar Friday morning. TAPPS activities are set to begin with a return to practice on September 8, followed by matches for Volleyball beginning on September 21.
Individual sports may return to competition September 21 as well. Fall Soccer and Football may play games beginning the week of September 28.
That decison cancels nearly half of the football regular season for TAPPS schools in the KBTX viewing area (Allen Academy, Huntsville – Alpha Omega, Brazos Christian, & St. Joseph).
Allen Academy Head Football Coach Adrian Adams spoke with KBTX and said the shortened season and more time off will make each game that much more meaningful. “You’re playing a district-only schedule so that makes those games very, very critical. You don’t have 3-4 non-district games to prepare for a district schedule. You’ve got one scrimmage and then you’re rolling into district games that count for you to try and make the playoffs. It makes it a little more competitive in some sense, but at the same time there’s a lot more pressure to be ready to go,” said Adams.
Adams, along with most other TAPPS schools will have to shuffle their schedule around a bit. Allen Academy’s first game back on October 2 falls on their original bye week. One team has also withdrawn from competition this year in the Rams’ district, making their 8-team district only 7 teams.
The first Friday night of varsity TAPPS football won’t happen until October 2.
