The city of Vicksburg is considering blocking off portions of Washington Street, for portions of this weekend, to allow for more pedestrian traffic in downtown Vicksburg. The test, Mayor George Flaggs Jr. said Monday, would likely be held this weekend — Labor Day weekend — and next weekend.
Earlier in August, Mayor George Flaggs Jr. discussed the idea of closing portions of downtown, on Washington Street, between Clay Street and Crawford Street, to allow businesses in what Flaggs calls the leisure district to expand outdoor seating and entertainment areas.
During a special called meeting of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen Monday to address other topics, Flaggs said the test period would be part of another special called meeting Wednesday afternoon. If approved, temporary roadblocks would be placed on Washington Street, blocking off access to vehicles from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. each Thursday, Friday and Saturday, ending at 7 a.m. Sunday.
The test period would be this weekend, beginning Thursday and ending Sunday, Sept. 6, and then again beginning Thursday, Sept. 10 through Sunday, Sept. 13.
