Temperatures are dropping throughout the U.S., as the primary day of winter, additionally referred to as the winter solstice, takes place this week throughout the nation and the Northern Hemisphere.
The occasion begins at 4:48 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Dec. 21, according to the U.S. Naval Observatory.
On the day of a solstice, the Earth is at its most tilt, 23.5 levels, both towards or away from the solar.
A winter solstice occurs within the Northern Hemisphere when the hemisphere is tilting away from the solar, making it the day with the least quantity of daylight. The solar is above the Tropic of Capricorn within the Southern Hemisphere and runs by Australia, Chile, southern Brazil and northern South Africa, according to the National Weather Service.
