KOLKATA: Table tennis player Harmeet Desai took a break from his busy schedule last week to prepare for his second innings. The Surat boy came down to the city to enjoy Durga Puja with fiancée Krittwika Sinha Roy. “It was a special Pujas this time for me as Harmeet stayed with us and together we did some pandal hopping,” Krittwika told TOI.
The table tennis duo got engaged in the presence of their families earlier this year.
Within two months, the country is going to have its next sporting couple as the two are set to tie the knots in early December. They got to know each other during their junior playing days. The relationship blossomed over time as the game took them to different parts of the world.
“Although since a young age we used to play in same tournaments across India, it was during our stints at various European leagues that we got close,” Krittwika said.
They played together in the Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) league and were part of the formidable Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) side too.
But it has mostly been a long-distance relationship as they played in different parts of the world. “That has not been a big issue for us as being in the same field, we understand each other’s assignments,” Krittwika stated.
The Bengal girl has already taken the first step in starting her new life by shifting allegiance from PSPB to Gujarat this season.
The women’s singles champion at the 13th South Asian Games in 2019, Krittwika also looks forward to fast forwarding her playing career too after missing action for almost one year after her mother passed away.
Both Harmeet and Krittwika will next play the National Ranking TT Championship (North Zone) later this month at Panchkula.
